Community organizers in New Orleans have received word that Gov. Edwards office is keeping a tally TODAY (May 18th) of how many people make time to call to support or reject the ‘Blue Lives Matter’ bill. Call NOW at 225.342.7015 and demand the Governor REJECT this bill.

This week, the local chapter of the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) began a last minute campaign to raise awareness of LA HB 953 which has been dubbed the ‘Blue Lives Matter’ bill.

According to their press release , “The criminal (in)justice system and those who uphold it have a long and egregious history of inflicting violence on Black and Brown bodies while hiding behind uniforms and badges. The “Blue Lives Matter” bill is an insidious attempt to destabilize our First Amendment rights as community members who hold the police, and others sworn by oath to serve and protect, accountable.”

Local organizer Angela Kinlaw had this to say,  “In local cases where citizens have been seeking accountability for police, police have been quick to say that laws (not policies) determine whether police get arrested or not for actions that citizens would be arrested on the spot for. Well, the state of Louisiana does all that it can to ensure that there are laws on the books to use, manipulate, and control citizens into compliance with systems deemed to exploit them. In the face of ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, this “Blue Lives Matter” bill is an intentional slap in the face, designed to control, create fear, and through police discretion penalize citizens for situations that often police create or escalate. We have seen it time and time again. Whether this bill lives or dies is now sole in the hands of Governor Edwards.”

WWAV’s Policy Director Nia Weeks added:

” When hate crime legislation is passed, it is supposed to be done so that vulnerable members of our community can seek to be made whole when they are physically, emotionally, and financially damaged by the manifestation of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Structurally there is a power differentiation between police officers and those they encounter.  When Black women are immersed in the criminal justice system, they enter a place that imparts racist, sexist, and homophobic ideology on them from the beginning.  Police officers engage Black women in hostile, arrogant manners that put them in danger both physically and emotionally. This legislation supports officers being able to press forward with dangerously bias actions and robs women and community members of any recourse to protect themselves.. “
